The local response to a burn injury is described as consisting of three zones: Full thickness - extends through the skin to deeper structures: appears black or white (eschar), leathery, produces no response to pain, and hairs are absent. ![]() Scarring may occur, particularly if healing is delayed and skin grafts may be required.
